home decor advice?

30 year old asked:

My husband hates floral prints and any sort of floral decoration. I’m so sick of stripes, plaid and squares. Our house is a blank canvas other than the square themed area rugs (none of them match) and our stripe shower curtain. We have a black leather couch that we’re still paying for…so have to keep it. I want our home to feel inviting and put together…like a model home. But his taste is horrible. I make only $8/hour and he makes $30/hour. His attitude is that since he makes more…what he says…”goes”. ugh. Any ideas? And no, I’m not willing to pick a fight with him or tell him to shove it. I’m only looking for decor advice that will suite both of us.
Thanks

You can use contrasting plain colors or try geometric prints. Texture is very big. Grasscloth wall paper is very in. You can also use photographs of family for decor.

You might go with a minimalist look. Very modern with chrome/black or a sleek look, no frills or extra trims.
I personally like an Asian look that entails the above with a natural feel. Bamboo, clean lines, very subdued but classy. Not a lot of clutter or extras. Lighting is another thing to consider when putting together your “theme”. Deciding between overhead, spot, indirect, or even table lamps can make all the difference in the overall appearance or your room/ house.
Go ahead and have some fun window shopping, you’ll find something that’ll work and then apply what you can with the budget you have. If it can’t be done all at once, keep saving until you can make it work, little by little.
    Again, have fun!

I get a lot of comments about how funky our place, is. its very eclectic, bits and peices from different places and countries, posters, art, photos, up around, just whatever I feel like getting for it. In saying that though i have seen some places that have tried it, and it just looks tacky, you really need to know what would suit. Perhaps a circles and squares theme? You can get some very cool stuff, and its apparently quite fashionalbe (and would go with your rug!)

Target and IKEA have great decorating items at reasonable prices. You can good ideas there, like for a color scheme. You can update the look of your place with a $20 can of paint, and then add some accent pieces with dimension. The shelves of cubes that hang on the wall are cool, and you just put stuff you already have on them. Hobby Lobby has inexpensive decorating items too. And while you’re at it…you should try applying to one of those deccorating shows and get it all for free!

There are some lovely, cool, very plain and tailored things out there.

One thing you could do is find magazines/books to browse through and find the idea of the things you like. (try your library, then you don’t have to buy them) That could give you an idea of a way to go, and share them with your husband. Find out what catches his eye.

Solid color pillows, textured pillows, vases, plants, ….find out the style of the things you like and then you can explore purchases. Many items can be found at stores like Target or Walmart. It doesn’t matter how much they cost if they are things that you like. Try thrift stores and garage sales.

Just do some homework first, so you aren’t wasting your money.

You need to go to stores like Home Goods and Marshalls. They have so much stuff and the prices are second to none. You can really find original pieces there too. You have to find what style calls your name, I love Tuscan. My husband isnt into the floral either. This style is old world, but not “girlie”. There is Asian, Moroccan, modern, - you can always go modern with a few pieces from another style and make it eclectic.

Great advise already. Afraid I can’t add much other than I like the pottery barn and crate & barrel look: simple, clean, structured and lived in. They have gorgeous catalogues and you can request on line. Look thru catalogs, magazines etc for a style/look you both agree on. Then have fun shopping. You can find great knock off items at bargain prices. For example large mirrors are $300 @ Pottery Barn. Large “gallery clocks” are $300 at Ballard Designs.. I’ve picked up similar things for a quarter of the price… Have fun!

You not only need the best ladders for the job nut also the safest… meeting all regulatory requirements. Without making sure of safety you could leave yourself open to claims and legal action….
