i know that ARCHITECTURE is creating the exterior structure of a building (the outside), and the INTERIOR DESIGN is the decoration of a building (the inside)..
but is there some branch that combines between the two of them at the same time..Studying the exterior and the interior design of homes..??

They are both different as you say but I’m sure there is a course that combines the two i.e. a combined honours degree of some kind. Go to as it has all the information you need if you living in the UK. I think architecture is better though because it gives you more career opportunities and you can even go in to interior design.

Do what you want to do the most. I have the same problem. It’s science arch or architecture for me… but i think you should do architecture. You have more back up plans in the future. It’s going to be hard but architecture is one the most rewarding jobs even though you don’t get paid much… only if you are like Frank Llloyd Wright, or Le corbusier, or Mies Van der Rohe, or Peter Eisenman, you will be rich. But yeah, do architecture. if you love architecture, then do it. if you love interior, then do that. follow your gut.

You’re lucky because there is a middle road for your dilema called ‘Interior Architecture’. Its fairly recent and not available at most universities (I think they started offering such courses in the early 1980s).

This combines the study of architecture and interior design. It main purpose is to allow you to redevelop existing buildings to allow for different functions. For example, converting a hospital into a school or offices into apartments and so on. But you will learn to design a building from scratch and deal with the details of interior spaces including all its aspects.

By studying Interior Architecture you learn architectural courses such as Construction methods, materials of construction, structures, history of architecture, professional practice, environmental control systems …etc. as well as interior design courses such as furniture and style, lighting, theories of design…etc. These would naturally be combined with CAD and presentation technique courses and various others that I can’t remember at the moment.

Its worth taking a look at the individual courses in each programme you find and maybe even talk to a member of faculty. One important thing to consider is what you want to do once you graduate. Ask about accreditation and whether or not the programme is approved by the AIA (if you’re in the states) or RIBA (if you’re in the UK) or for that matter any architectural body that accredits and whose approval you need to practice. The same goes for interior design bodies.

I don’t know in which country you intend to study but just to give you an idea, there is a course at Ohio university
